Shen Zhaobang

Mr. Shen Zhaobang was born in 1939 and graduated in 1961 from the Department of Chemical Technology, Leningrad Forest Technical Academy, Russia   He was working as visiting scholar in the Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,

Sweden and the Department of Chemistry, University of Sheffield, England from 1983-1984. He has been appointed as the vice director and director of Institute of Chemical Industry of Forest Products, Chinese Academy of Forestry from 1990-2000. Presently he is Research professor and Doctorial supervisor of the Institute, Member of council of Chinese Society of Forestry Chairman of the sub-society of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Forest Products, Chinese Society of Forestry, Chief editor of “Chemistry and Industry of Forest Products” and “Journal of Chemical Industry of Forest Products”. He was honored with young-middle aged scientist with outstanding contribution of Ministry of Forestry and is a gainer of the governmental special allowance.

      Main Achievements
He has been engaged in wood hydrolysis and furfural production technology in sixties and seventies. The research on continuous rectification of furfural has played a significant role in improvement of the Chinese furfural quality to reach the international advanced level and satisfy the demand of international market. The technology worked has been widely used in Chinese furfural plants and the project was awarded with the fourth prize from Guantong province, the second prize from shangxi province and the third prize from Ministry of Forestry.
Since eighties he has been working on the chemistry and utilization of forest natural products and engaged in the projects “Study on the tannins from Larix gmelini barks”, “Study on tannins from Acacia mearnsii”, “Study on polyphenols from Pinus massoniana needles”, “Study on chemistry of Eucalyptus citriodora leaves”, “Study on chemistry of plant polyprenols”, “Chemistry and utilization of Gynostemma pentaphyllum”, “Purification and utilization of effective components from Ginkgo biloba leaves”, “Chemistry of acylphenols of Ginkgo biloba leaves” etc. In these researches, more than ten new natural compounds have been isolated and identified; a number of HPLC methods for quantitative analysis of effective components, such as gypenosides, polyprenols, ginkgolides, ginkgoflavonoids and acylphenols; as well as the production method for separation and purification of the relative components have been established. More than sixty scientific papers have been published in different international and domestic journals.
